    Great Things in Downtown Huntsville

Size doesn’t matter. Huntsville is proof of that by offering big city happenings in a downtown proportionately smaller than cities in the 170,000 population range.

Visitors to Huntsville’s downtown may be surprised at all it has to offer: arts, dining, children’s museums, nightclubs, shopping, and green space for relaxing.

The offerings should continue to grow with the recent opening of the 300-room Embassy Suites hotel, an emerging array of cool restaurants and living places, and a $150 million makeover of the Marketing Square site, world famous Bridge Street, a destination shopping development.

Downtown revitalizations will expand the city core in several directions. A renaissance of sorts is changing the face of the Lincoln Mill area along Meridian Street.

If it’s relaxation you’re after, consider all the choices. There’s Big Spring International Park and the new Bicentennial Park with the interactive fountains for splashing in. The Tom Thrasher Memorial Fountain along the 1,100 foot canal threading through the Big Spring International Park extension near the Embassy Suites also added a nice touch.

History buffs may enjoy browsing in Harrison Brothers Hardware store on the courthouse square, strolling through historic Twickenham and Old Town districts, or visiting the Weeden House. Those with children may want to drop in The Early Works Museum, including the historic Huntsville Depot and Constitution Village.

Art lovers should delight in the Huntsville Art Museum – even more so after its $8 million expansion.

Theater buffs might take in a play at the Von Braun Center Playhouse, Renaissance Theatre, or the Merrimac Performing Arts Center.

The after-dark crowd can dine and enjoy lively tunes at such places as the Jazz Factory or Humphrey’s Bar and Grill. Other popular bars and eateries include Sammy T’s, Kaffeekldatsch, Furniture Factory on Meridian Street, Papou’s Greek Restaurant, Pauli’s Chophouse, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, and others.

Huntsville draws academics as well with universities, a top research park, biogenetics, and medical centers. However, with all of the other mentioned attractions, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why this city is named on several lists of top U.S. places to live!
